The Arts Place Early Years Drama Sessions are designed in line with the EYFS Statutory Framework
Each class is designed to develop children’s confidence, vocabulary, speaking & listening skills, ability to share ideas, use their imagination and think creatively. With role play, storytelling, puppetry, props, costume and parachute play!
Each term we focus on a different children’s literary classic, bringing the words, characters and themes of the book to life through drama. Whether we’re following Alice down the rabbit hole to Wonderland, learning to fly with Peter Pan, or discovering new animals with Mowgli in the jungle, we’re always exploring, imagining and creating.
We can also tailor-make a 10-week session plan to match the topics and themes then children are learning about in the classroom, bringing them to life through drama.

How The Arts Place support the EYFS Framework

PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Working as a whole group and in smaller groups to dramatise moments from the story, children create strong bonds through teamwork and cooperation. Respect for one another and taking turns to listen to each other’s ideas is a key part of all of our sessions. Children develop empathy or others by putting themselves in the shoes of the characters they meet. A supportive learning environment is created where children feel safe to take risks and share their ideas and feelings.

MATHEMATICS
Whether we’re counting out the sounds in new characters’ names or the number of legs on the curious caterpillar, forming a circle for storytelling or a square for the Red Queen’s courtroom, we’re developing children’s numeracy skills in an interactive and memorable way.

UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD
Exploring different environments, lands and worlds is key to our drama sessions. Using our imaginations to create a ‘Wonderland’ helps children to think creatively and compare their own lives and world to the lives of those in the story.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Our Drama Sessions are interactive, action-packed and full of energy, developing children’s coordination, movement and spacial awareness.

LITERACY
Each session we learn a new ‘word of the week’, which forms the focus of our session and develops children’s core vocabulary. Extension work can be suggested to enrich the learning. “Write a letter to Alice explaining why it’s important to be curious.”

COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE
The Arts Place Early Years Drama Sessions bring words to life through drama, creating a rich language environment. Children speak lines from the story, play different characters and express their ideas. Children are encouraged to listen to the ideas of others and to express their own. As young performers, children experiment with communicating through physical gesture and facial expression as well as with words.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS
Children express their thoughts, ideas and feelings through drama and theatrical techniques, such as role play, movement and dance, hot seating, mirror and statue work and improvisation.
“It is such a privilege to give children their first experience of drama. The delight on their faces as they meet and become the characters from the stories and their excitement at sharing their ideas. The greatest reward is watching children grow in confidence each week, finding their voices, using their imaginations and expressing themselves!”
